Department of Statistics & Mathematics

The Department of STATISTICS and MATHEMATICS was established in the year 1965. Initially only the subject Statistics of 100 marks was introduced, which was one of the core subjects at that time. Subsequently the subject Mathematics was introduced in the same paper and out of 100 marks 30 marks was allotted to Mathematics part. The name of the paper was changed to BUSINESS MATHEMATICS and STATISTICS from STATISTICS. The university again revised the syllabus and it came to effect from the session 2001-2002 and the paper was introduced in the 2^nd year of three- year Degree Course with 50 marks to both the subjects.  1+1+1 Degree Course was introduced in 2007 which replaced 2+1 degree course. This time MATHEMATICS was introduced in part 1 and BUSINESS STATISTICS in part 2 with 100 marks to both the subjects .In 2011 semester system was introduced. This time BUSINESS STATISTICS was introduced in 3^rd semester and MATHEMATICS in 5^th semester and both the paper carried 100 marks. In 2019 CBCS system was introduced. In B Com (which is usually known as non-honors) BUSINESS MATHEMATICS and STATISTICS was introduced in the 2^nd semester. In B Com honors program BUSINESS STATISTICS was introduced in the 3^rd semester and BUSINESS MATHEMATICS in the 4^th semester. In 2020 B Com (non honors) program was dropped.

Late Khireswar Borah (K Borah) was the founder teacher of the department who started  academic activity of the department in 1965. Afterwards, Mr. Poresh Hazarika (P. Hazarika) and Mr. Padmolochon Hazarika (P.L. Hazarika) joined the department as permanent faculty in the subjects Statistics and Mathematics respectively. Unfortunately, Mr. P. Hazarika suddenly expired in Delhi while pursuing MPhil and Mr. P. L. Hazarika went to Gauhati University for higher studies. Mr. Poresh C. Borah (P. C. Borah ) joined in the department as permanent faculty on 31/8/1985 in place of late Poresh Hazarika and Ms Monimala Bordoloi as temporary faculty in lieu of Mr. P. L.Hazarika. After returning from higher studies, Dr. P. L. Hazarika resigned and Mr. Shobhan Saikia joined the department as permanent faculty on 1/3/88 in his place. Meanwhile Prof. K. Borah was appointed as Principal and Mr. Rupam Sarmah joined the department on 1/4/1995. Again in 2004 Dr Poresh C. Borah was appointed principal of the college and Mr. Dibyajyoti Borah joined in the department on 14/11/2005 in his place. Mr. Goswami resigned on 14/3/2017 and went to Cotton College. After a long interval, Dr Kuldeep Goswami joined the department on 24/8/2021 and resigned on 31/10/2021 as he joined as Assistant Professor in the Department of STATISTICS of Dibrugarh University.

Now the department has two teachers: – Mr. Rupam Sarmah, HOD (Associate Professor) and Mr. Shobhan Saikia (Associate Professor) in the subjects Statistics and Mathematics respectively.
